Carlo & Johnny

About Carlo & Johnny

We believe few things bring people together better than a good story. Particularly the true ones. And, wow, do we have one to tell!

We’re named for the intrepid detective and undercover cop who, after a long stakeout in 1949, closed the place down for illegal gambling. Back then, it was called the Fox and Crow, and by that time, had already served as home to stagecoach stopovers, speakeasies, and gangster hideouts.

The incomparable Kitty Kallen was performing the night when the police stormed in, and she dedicated her final song to them. Decades later, she told Jeff Ruby that she should have sang ‘We Gotta Get Out Of This Place’ and not ‘Mule Train.’

Jeff Ruby opened Carlo & Johnny in 2011, adding to a growing family of award-winning steakhouses. Cincinnati Magazine named us the best new restaurant in the city that year, and we’ve been delivering the finest total dining experience ever since.

This restaurant is about history. It never leaves us, and when you’re here, it’s all around. You’ll see it in the luxurious décor that pays homage to one of the most storied periods in American history with nods to old Hollywood, heroes both famous and notorious, and a time when extravagance was the order of the day. You’ll find historical artifacts here like an antique slot machine, Art Deco-inspired art, and even doorknobs from Al Capone’s winter home. Jeff Ruby has said that our guests digest the ambiance with every bite of steak and sip of wine. At Carlo & Johnny, there are memorable portions of both.

Since the beginning, we’ve featured an incomparable selection of U.S.D.A. Prime, Dry-Aged steaks alongside a highly acclaimed and extensive raw bar. Energetic entertainment and a premier level of service that is a throwback to a different era. Guests have told us they feel we’re a fine dining steakhouse with a bit of an Italian accent, surely a compliment to not only our namesake detectives but the passion we have for our extraordinary menu and warm hospitality.

We hope you join us soon to experience a culinary experience that is every bit as memorable as our history.

Oh, and when you do, be sure to ask about Emily. Yes, we have a resident ghost, and you’ll love that story as well. Cheers!

“The design, the location, the chef, et al, are indeed important but the only thing that is really important is to make every guest feel really important.”
