Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse Named To Food Network Top 50 List

Though the decor and menus vary from coast to coast, from Western-style steakhouses to old-school Midwest supper clubs to big-city temples of haute beef, these are the best places to sate your carnivore cravings and enjoy a side of local flair. **** Restaurateur Jeff Ruby once said, "People don't come here because they're hungry. They can go to the refrigerator for that. Our guests come here to celebrate life." That mantra has pervaded Ruby's namesake steakhouse, which counts locations in both Columbus and Cincinnati (as well as three in Kentucky and Tennessee), with a high-end experience that combines prime steaks, seafood and sushi, live nightly entertainment and impeccable service. The art deco design mirrors that refined sensibility, with a 30-foot-long original Rothschild & Sons hand-carved bar, Swarovski crystal chandeliers and an eclectic mix of antiques from Ruby's per...

Jeff Ruby Inducted Into Restaurant Hall Of Fame

By Andy Brownfield  – Reporter, Cincinnati Business Courier  Cincinnati restaurateur Jeff Ruby was among three people, and only two living, included in the first class of the Ohio Restaurant Hall of Fame. On Jan. 13, Ruby was inducted into the Ohio Restaurant Association's Hall of Fame along with Cameron Mitchell Restaurants CEO Cameron Mitchell, and, posthumously, Billy Ingram, founder of White Castle. Ruby got started in the Cincinnati restaurant scene with the Precinct in 1981 and now owns Jeff Ruby's Steakhouses in Cincinnati, Louisville, Nashville, Columbus and Lexington as well as Carlo & Johnny in Montgomery.  "I told the dishwashers in Columbus that congratulated me this: 'Nobody inducted in the Hall of Fame in any sport did it without the help of his teammates, coaches, trainers, etc.,...

The 2018 year in Columbus dining

From the affordable to the splurge-worthy, here are the new eateries helping push the city’s food scene forward So many new restaurants, so little time. That pretty much describes another year of dining out in Columbus. In a booming culinary hotspot like our city, it’s difficult to comprehensively explore every buzzworthy eatery that premieres during a 12-month period — even when you’re getting paid to do it. Well, boo-hoo, right? Limp appeal for sympathy aside, my policy of waiting a month for new restaurants to get their act together before I visit them — and I visit multiple times — can make my job tricky. Especially when a wave of interesting places opens just as the insane holiday season starts. So, it’s with a dash of hubris that I present a year-in-review list of notable new eateries that includes a few restaurants I haven’t even w...

Jeff Ruby Culinary Entertainment creates C-suite

Jeff Ruby Culinary Entertainment, the restaurant group created by the eponymous steakhouse proprietor, has created its first C-suite, hiring new executives to help fuel the company's growth. Jeff Ruby Culinary Entertainment (JRCE) has hired Tim Taggart and Ryan Coslett into the newly created positions of chief financial officer and chief people officer, respectively.  It's a big move for the Ruby organization. President Britney Ruby Miller, Jeff Ruby's daughter, previously told me the restaurant group would manage each of its locations independently. That changed in about 2012 when Ruby began hiring and promoting a number of directors, including his daughter as director of guest services and development and Bawe Sinholster as director of training. Things evolved as the company continued to expand geographically and open more restaurants.  "...

Iconic Cincinnati women make their own Maker's Mark

Polly Campbell, Cincinnati Enquirer | Published 4:13 p.m. ET Nov. 28, 2018 Bourbon still maintains its reputation as a man's drink. And steakhouses as a man's restaurant. Those old stereotypes are hard to maintain in Cincinnati, where Molly Wellmann is our best-known bourbon expert, and Britney Ruby-Smith is President of the top steakhouses in the city.  The two got together, along with bartenders from Ruby's and a few other in the hospitality industry and went to Loretto, Kentucky, recently to create their own private label Maker's Mark.  Maker's Mark is unusual in that it rotates its barrels in the rickhouse, so that each one tastes similar, and they can bottle a consistent product. But for their premium label Cask 46, they vary flavors by adding different oak staves to barrels for its last month or so of aging. They use both French and American oak, wi...

Jeff Ruby's Precinct Named To Robb Report's Top 21 Steakhouses In America

American steakhouses are the last bastion of unabashed self-indulgence. Traditional chophouses, complete with white tablecloths and bow-tied waiters, can be identified easily by their menus, relics of gluttonous days gone past. There are gleaming towers of chilled crustaceans, slabs of red meat—black on the outside and blue on the inside—and copious sides of potatoes and vegetables, prepared the way god intended: puréed with butter and cream. The portions are big, yet no one is going to judge you for cleaning your plate, ordering an elaborate, blow-torched dessert, or polishing off a bottle of scotch with your meal. While plenty of these nostalgic establishments still exist and thrive around the country, the American steakhouse landscape is changing. Now steakhouses are serving more exquisite cuts and rare breeds and widely utilizing dry-aging, a process tha...
